Shining Force-Active Members
Alef
Joins Shining Force in the seventh chapter, in the Tower of the Ancients. She and Torasu are fighting to keep Darksol from the key to the Gate of the Ancients on the East part of Rune. They aren't quite strong enough, however, but they are 15th level before promotion. I rather liked her, as she was one of few mages with Bolt, and she wasn't shorted on HP or MP. Besides with her teeth always peeking out of her mouth, she looked like she was always smiling.
Anri
Joins Shining Force in the second chapter, in Manarina. She is a mage in the academy, and at first believed that Max lied about her father's demise. She starts off fairly weak, but will quickly develop into one of the best mages, with Bolt in her arsenal. Strangely enough, she is an optional member, you don't have to follow her to where she seeks some time alone, and even stranger, at the end, even if you didn't get her, she cries with the rest.
Arthur
Joins Shining Force in the second chapter, in Manarina. He is a knight in the academy, and by a form of osmosis, picked up some minor magic skills. He starts off fairly weak, but will quickly develop into one of the best knights, with three first level spells in his arsenal. He isn't difficult to get, but you can't get him before getting the orb.
Diane
Joins Shining Force in the third chapter, in Bustoke. She acted as the guide to the quarry where the men were being forced to dig up the Laser Eye. She's a better archer than Hans, but I didn't tend to use either of them, favoring spear- wielding knights. Is it just me or are there an awful lot of elves, and centaurs?
Domingo
Joins Shining Force in the fourth chapter, in the second Pao. He hatches from a Domingo egg, so I assume he is a Domingo, but its not actually stated. He is really good at cold magic. He floats rather than flying, but is really good as far as I'm concerned. I always reserve a seat in the party for this cute ball of jelly. He even sounds more intelligent than most of the other characters. At birth!
Earnest
Joins Shining Force in the fourth chapter, in Urbantol. He is a knight that actually manages to bust down a wall, while injured, to get into the fortress. He kind of intimidated me the first time I saw him, in Pao, but he is one of the coolest characters. I have fun giving him the Demon Lance, he does a lot of damage, and rarely suffers more than hit point damage.
Hanzou
Joins Shining Force in the eighth and final chapter, in Protectora, by leaving a note in the bushes at the town's entrance. It's strange to say, but even though there are only four or five fights left in the game, I always let him in. He's just too good to let past.
Khris
Joins Shining Force in the first chapter, in the Castle of Alterone. She lets Max out of the jail her father puts him in, and shows a secret passage that leads both outside and to headquarters. She is the best healer, as far as I'm concerned, even after you get Torasu, but that's because I like her appearance. She looks kind of like a kitty walking on stilt legs. She even works fairly well as a fighter.
Max
Leads the Shining Force from the beginning, officially recognized in chapter two. He wields the Chaos Breaker from chapter seven until the end. Even if he weren't mandatory I'd never let him out of the party. He's most certainly one of the strongest people in the group. The highest I've gotten him is 32nd or 34th, in that range, but the battery backup of the game gave out before I could find out if there is an Egress level 2. Once Dark Dragon cast Desoul on him, nearly giving me a heart attack, but comically, nothing happened.
Musashi
Joins the Shining Force in Chapter seven, using a note on a wall, to do so. He looks kind of goofy, but I never let that stop me. He's really strong, rivalling Earnest, Zylo, Max, and Hanzou. He wields katana, but also can use other swords, at least those not owner specific (ie the Sword of Light and the Chaos Breaker).
Pelle
Joins Shining Force in the third chapter. He was a mercenary working for the bad guys, but decided he had morals. So they threw him off a cliff. He managed to not get killed, and decided to help whoever was the enemy of the guys that almost killed him. I've never seen anyone with such a big chin. He looks really aristocratic, but that doesn't stop him from being a strong fighter. He is a sometime favorite. There are times though, that I get fed up with his strange appearance.
Tao
Joins Shining Force in the first chapter, in Guardiana. She is an young mage, and other members of the town don't believe her to be very good. She's not a big HP person, but she gets Blaze 4 and can use it well. She's great for toasting monster hides. I've always taken her into the last fight, figuring that I need all the mages I can get, besides, she's got one of the most chipper personalities in the game.
Torasu
Joins Shining Force in the seventh chapter, in the Tower of the Ancients. He and Alef are fighting to keep Darksol from the key to the Gate of the Ancients on the East part of Rune. They aren't quite strong enough, however, but they are 15th level before promotion. He started off with Aura 4, which was a big point in his favor, but I still usually took Khris over him, as I like her a lot better.
Vankar
Joins Shining Force in the fourth chapter, in Pao. He is a knight and is supposed to be guarding the train, but he sleeps too much. I never had any problems, but my parents never liked him. They said he was weak and missed a lot. I think they just didn't upgrade his weapons soon enough, and had bad luck. When I used him, he missed only as often as Arthur or Pelle, which is more than Earnest, and much less than Hans and Lyle. Oh well.
Zylo
Joins Shining Force in the third chapter, in Bustoke. He starts off made mad by a potion that the baddies gave him to keep him from interfering. After freeing the men of Bustoke, you get a Moonstone, and have to take it to a chemist, who turns it into Lunar Dew. Then comes the fun part. Trying to keep him from ripping Max's head off, while getting him to open his mouth to pour down the gunk. He's really grateful afterwards though, and is one the coolest fighters. Before promotion, though, I think he's got a much cooler attack method.
